How to Write a Resume for FAANG Companies

How to Write a Resume That Gets You Into FAANG

Getting past the initial resume screen at FAANG companies is harder than ever. These companies receive hundreds of thousands of applications and use both automated ATS systems and manual recruiter screening. Here's how to make your resume stand out.

Resume Structure That Works

1. Header (Keep It Simple)

FirstName LastName
email@example.com | +1-555-123-4567
github.com/username | linkedin.com/in/username

No photos, no objective statements, no "References available upon request." Every line should earn its place.

2. Experience (Reverse Chronological, 2-3 Roles)

This is where 80% of the screening happens. For each role:

Format:

Company Name — Role Title Month Year – Present
- Impact statement with metrics (start with a verb)
- Technical depth (what you built, with what tools)
- Scale (users, requests, data size)

Good example:

  • Designed and implemented a distributed caching layer using Redis, reducing API latency by 45% for 2M daily users
  • Led migration from monolith to microservices (Go), decreasing deployment time from 2 hours to 8 minutes

Bad example:

  • Worked on the backend team building APIs
  • Helped with the migration to microservices

3. Education (Keep It Brief)

  • University, Degree, Year
  • GPA if 3.7+ (for 0-3 years experience only)
  • Relevant coursework for new grads only

4. Projects (For New Grads or Career Changers)

  • 2-3 projects with live links
  • Show technical depth, not just tutorials
  • Include: problem, solution, tech stack, results

Common Mistakes

  1. Too long: Keep it to 1 page (0-5 years) or max 2 pages (5+ years)
  2. Buzzwords without substance: "Passionate about innovation" adds nothing
  3. Listing responsibilities instead of achievements: "Responsible for the database" vs "Optimized PostgreSQL queries, reducing p95 latency by 60%"
  4. Poor formatting: Use consistent fonts, spacing, and alignment. ATS systems need clean text
  5. Missing keywords: Mirror the job description's terminology
