Job Description
Role Context
Payments and SWIFT related initiatives are operationally complex, high-risk, and highly interdependent across Product, Engineering, Vendors, and Operations. These initiatives frequently span multiple systems, regulatory obligations, and operational teams, requiring strong domain expertise and disciplined delivery to ensure safe adoption.
The Operations Subject Matter Expert (SME) role exists to provide clear operational ownership and execution leadership for this change.
Key Responsibilities
Payments & SWIFT Domain Ownership:
- Act as the Payments and SWIFT Subject Matter Expert for assigned initiatives.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of:
- End-to-end SWIFT payment flows and lifecycle.
- ISO related changes and operational impacts.
- New SWIFT message types, hybrid address requirements, and delivery deadlines.
- Payment tracking and data visibility initiatives.
- Guide other analysts and operational contributors on domain specific considerations and best practices.
Operational Change Ownership
- Own the operational change workstream for initiatives impacting Payments Operations and Treasury Operations.
- Serve as the primary operational point of contact for cross functional delivery.
- Translate technical or product change into clear operational requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Ensure operational controls and principles are consistently applied.
- Escalate risks and delivery concerns appropriately, with clear recommendations.
Driving Operational Inefficiencies To Closure
- Take ownership of operational inefficiencies within scope, converting them into clearly defined and deliverable workstreams.
- Typical focus areas include:
- Alerting and monitoring improvements.
- Account and ledger cleanup activities.
- Case management enablement.
- Tracking and data visibility improvements.
- Ensure work progresses to measurable outcomes, providing clarity and momentum for contributing analysts.
Delivery Discipline & Execution Leadership
- Apply structured delivery discipline by:
- defining scope and ownership,
- clarifying RACI and dependencies,
- tracking risks, issues, and actions,
- providing realistic delivery timelines.
- Coordinate closely with Product, Engineering, Vendors, and Operations.
- Maintain delivery momentum and support decision making where trade offs are required.
- Act as a delivery role model for analyst level contributors.
Documentation, Readiness & BAU Handover
- Own the creation and quality of operational documentation, including:
- operational requirements and acceptance criteria,
- QA on SWIFT specific technical design tests
- rollout, monitoring, and fallback approaches,
- runbooks and BAU handover materials.
- Review and guide documentation produced by other analysts.
- Ensure changes are operationally ready, supportable, and auditable prior to go live.
Risk, Compliance & Stakeholder Engagement
- Identify, document, and communicate operational risks.
- Support mitigation planning with Operations managers and stakeholders.
- Ensure regulatory, safeguarding, and policy requirements are met.
- Communicate clearly with senior stakeholders on progress, risks, and decisions, representing the analyst team where appropriate.
Leadership
- Provide day to day functional leadership to analysts working on operational change.
- Set standards for delivery, documentation, and operational readiness.
- Coach and support analysts through complex problem spaces.
- Act as an escalation point for domain specific questions.
- Contribute to capability uplift across the Operations Delivery analyst community.
What Success Looks Like
- Payments and SWIFT initiatives move from discussion to clear ownership and delivery.
- Operational risks are identified early and actively managed.
- Analysts are aligned, supported, and producing consistent, high quality outputs.
- BAU teams receive clear documentation and confidence at go live.
- The SME is recognised as a trusted delivery and domain lead, not just a task executor.
This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.
Qualifications
Skills & Experience: Strong experience in payments operations within financial services. Hands on exposure to SWIFT networks and messaging. Strong operational judgement with the ability to balance delivery pace and risk. Proven ability to lead delivery through influence rather than authority. High quality written communication and documentation skills. Comfortable operating in ambiguity and providing clarity for others.
