The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer plays a key role supporting Technology, Projects, & Execution (TPE) Innovation Research & Development (R&D) and Specialty Sales Technology (SST) Product Development Projects at Richmond Technology Center (RTC). This includes leading the shaping of innovative Chevron Transformation Technology and Base Business projects that further Chevron’s Enterprise strategy of delivering lower Carbon and higher returns.
This role upholds RTC Facilities, Labs & Maintenance (FLM) team’s mission to operate safely, reliably, predictably, without incident producing confident results. This involves taking a lead role in working on project teams that involve collaborating with PhD Researcher Engineers, Research Technologists, Technicians, Pipe & Machine Shop, Instrument & Electrical Shop, Discipline Enterprise Engineers and Innovation Leadership.
Further, this role establishes priorities for project work, develops instrumentation and controls engineering designs, and drives projects through all 5 phases of the RTC Project Lifecycle. Project Managers are assigned R&D projects by the Team Leader of RTC Project Services.
A successful candidate must have an astute stakeholder management mindset that builds relationships at the forefront of solution delivery.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
- Specify, purchase, and support field instrumentation & controls installations of project items and activities.
- Markup and design Instrumentation and Control diagrams/loops/drawings according to Chevron Engineering Standards (CES).
- Design instrument loops including, selection & sizing of flow meters, control valves and other field instrumentation.
- Design or customize PLC, DCS including clear communication and close collaboration with electrical engineer and instrument technicians.
- Troubleshoot Instrumentations and Control problems & issues, develop alternatives, propose & implement solutions for long-term reliability.
- Respond to technical inquiries, make recommendations, improve design tools, develop design procedures and provide training and support to the I&E Shop.
- Proactively drive activities that manage capital and expense projects.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Computer, Electrical Electronics preferred)
- Demonstrated fundamental knowledge of field instrumentation & control systems including sensors, transmitters, analyzers, final control elements, process control systems, communication protocols and wiring methods.
- Experience designing instrument loops including selection & sizing of flow meters, control valves and other field instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and simultaneously work on day-to-day operations support and long-term projects, including alternating between project management and core I&C engineering responsibilities
- Proven ability to lead through influence and collaborate across disciplines to drive safe, effective outcomes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing PLC panel/cabinet layouts and instrumentation drawings utilizing AutoCAD, including specification of bill of materials
- Fundamental knowledge of engineering project management, including use of budgetary estimating & scheduling tools/applications to produce desired results in safety, budget, and schedule adherence
- Experience in the oil & gas industry or small-scale pilot R&D laboratory

- The anticipated salary range for this position is $120,300 – $ 206,400. The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
