How will you make an impact in this role?
The Global Commercial Services team at American Express is looking for a talented Software Engineer III with strong full-stack development skills, a solid understanding of product development, and a track record of delivering high-quality software as part of a collaborative engineering team. This role will contribute to building our next-generation expense management platform, designed to provide actionable insights into business spending for our Small and Medium-sized (SMS) businesses and Corporate customers. We aim to deliver an innovative, scalable, and highly integrated expenses solution that transforms business spending into a seamless, insightful experience.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the design, development, and deployment of our next-generation expense management solution.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to refine product requirements and ensure readiness for development.
- Support and collaborate with team members, contributing to effective teamwork within the team, across guilds, and with cross-functional partners.
- Develop platform services following established architectural patterns such as domain-driven design and hexagonal architecture.
- Assist in evaluating and integrating SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS solutions to meet functional and non-functional requirements.
- Participate in Request-for-Comment (RFC) processes and proof-of-concept (POC) activities.
- Monitor and improve application performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Follow and contribute to team coding standards and system design conventions.
- Apply established development processes to support the team’s Software Development Lifecycle.
- Contribute to task estimation and execution, working with the team to meet milestone goals and address risks or blockers.
- Demonstrate progress on assigned work and support team milestone updates to stakeholders.
- Incorporate feedback to improve features and contribute to evolving engineering practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Overall experience: 3–6 years of experience in software engineering and product development, primarily in individual contributor roles.
- Education: Bachelor of Science or Engineering, specializing in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Software Engineering disciplines (or equivalent experience).
- Experience in full-stack development including web UI, middleware, platform services, and exposure to infrastructure as code.
- Relevant certifications in software engineering, cloud, or related areas are a plus.
- Experience working as part of high-performing engineering teams, contributing to team success and collaboration.
- At least 2–4 years of experience in Frontend technologies for web, including Typescript and frameworks such as React, Angular, or similar.
- At least 2–4 years of experience in Backend and general-purpose programming languages and run-times such as Node.js, Python, Ruby, or Go.
- Exposure to mobile app development, either with cross-platform technologies such as React Native, or native development.
- Experience collaborating with product management and UX design teams to deliver user-focused features.
- Hands-on experience with cloud services for application development such as AWS (e.g., Lambda, S3, API Gateway, SQS, ECS, RDS).
- Hands-on experience with common storage technologies including relational and NoSQL databases.
- Familiarity with distributed databases such as Postgres-compatible systems (e.g., CockroachDB) is a plus.
- Experience developing data-driven UI components and dynamic forms is a plus.
- Experience with monitoring, logging, and debugging tools such as Datadog or similar platforms.
- Experience writing, testing, and maintaining application code aligned with best practices and compliance standards.
- Demonstrated curiosity and interest in building scalable products; entrepreneurial mindset is a plus.
Salary Range: $103,750.00 to $174,750.00 annually + bonus + benefits
