Your Role And Responsibilities As an Associate Data Engineer, you’ll design and build the systems that let organisations turn raw data into real insight. You’ll work with modern tools, cloud platforms, and big‑data technologies to create pipelines, storage solutions, and architectures that keep data flowing smoothly and securely.
Your work will help data scientists, analysts, and business teams access clean, reliable, and scalable data — forming the foundation for dashboards, automation, and machine‑learning models. If you’re curious, analytical, and excited to solve real‑world problems, this role is built for you.
What You’ll Work on as an Associate Data Engineer:
Design, build, and maintain data integration pipelines that connect multiple systems and data sources
Work with super agents such as IBM Consulting Advantage & IBM BoB to responsibly use AI to augment your data engineering responsibilities.
Work with data transformation tools to extract, transform, and load data for reporting, AI, agentic & digital use cases.
Collaborate with a hybrid organisational hierarchy across both humans and agents that are cross functional, operating in a multidisciplinary team, including data scientists, platform engineers and business analysts to achieve project goals.
Physicalise data into a variety of different data platform technologies & formats including embedding data into vector databases to support generative or agentic ai use cases.
Support data modelling, data mapping, and documentation for integration workflows
Troubleshoot pipeline issues, improve performance, and optimise processes
Work with APIs, streaming data platforms, and batch workflows depending on project needs
Help implement data governance practices, including metadata, lineage, and quality checks
Support cloud‑based data integration and automation using tools such as Azure Data Factory, AWS Glue, Google Dataflow, IBM watsonx.data integration, or similar platforms
Preferred Education Master's Degree
Required Technical And Professional Expertise Required Technical Experience
Experience with agentic data engineering patterns and principles.
Significant experience in prompt engineering and especially using responsible AI & agentic tools to accelerate the Data Development Lifecycle (DDLC)
Experience with at least one programming/scripting language such as Python, SQL, or Scala
Understanding of ETL/ELT concepts, data warehousing, and integration patterns
Exposure to cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud)
Familiarity with data modelling, database structures, and APIs
Problem‑solving skills in debugging data quality, transformation, and pipeline issues
Knowledge of tools such as DataStage, Informatica, Talend, dbt, Airflow, or similar (if applicable)
Understanding of batch vs. real‑time data processing
Capable of authoring data assets that are both human and machine readable. (appropriate documentation and metadata tagging etc)
Required Professional Skills Strong analytical approach to problem solving
Ability to communicate the impact of data in general, engineering & integration to those around you, including & especially those who are not technical.
Capable of managing a data engineering agentic organisational hierarchy.
Capable of constructing a complex prompt to instruct and guide an agent’s behaviour.
A quantified intellectual curiosity and a capability of adapting to new technologies, practices & frameworks for data engineering.
Strong communication skills and comfort explaining technical concepts clearly
Ability to prioritise tasks and work in fast‑moving environments

Required Education Qualifications Predicted a 2:1 Bachelor's Degree or achieved in a STEM, Economics, Statistical degree or similar.
